Tips to write graduate theses

1) To make a theoretical framework in a degree thesis, the first thing to do is a survey of previous studies and research on the topic or object of study -preferably from the last five years-, and review how they structured and developed their theoretical frameworks, which are the most important authors who are referred, as well as the main texts on the subject. Once this review is done, it is time to select the preferred authors and approaches and then begin writing, always in an academic tone and citing accordingly.

2) The reasons why the thesis is rejected can vary substantially from one discipline to another. In general, the most common thing is a lack of coherence and articulation between the theoretical and the methodological frameworks, and the same can occur between the problem statement and the research objectives. The reasons are clearer and more evident in a thesis project, which should be the filter in which the viability of the research is decided. When a thesis is already fully developed, if it had appropriate and conscientious supervision by the tutor, it should not be rejected.

3) Regarding bibliographic selection, there are several criteria to take into account. In principle, it is preferable that it be as up-to-date as possible on the topic at hand. Obviously, there are topics -especially at the theoretical level- in which references must be made to the original authors of the theories that are taken, and in this case it is advisable to use the original bibliography, even when it is from the last century. Other criteria to take into account is not to use bibliography or information or articles from unrecommended and rather "truck" websites, such as rincondelvago, or even Wikipedia, which have no academic or scientific basis.

4) How to bring a university research work closer to scientific concepts. Theses or final degree works in the university environment generally tend to approach scientific concepts, supported and validated by the bibliography and the most recent studies on the topic or subject in question. It is the student's task -within the framework of their research- to investigate and track the most up-to-date scientific concepts, for which they must do a job of searching and selecting texts not only in libraries -public and private- but with the tools that are offered today in Internet.

5) How to organize and put togehter loose ideas for a research paper. Once the research topic has been decided and defined, it is possible to order and organize the ideas that the student has regarding it, being crucial to define the research problem through questions that focus on the object of study, and those aspects that you want to investigate. Having posed the problem, we proceed to define the objectives (one general objective and three or four specific ones), which will leave the basic structure assembled to think and decide how to develop the theoretical framework and which methodology (qualitative or quantitative, or a mixture of both), with which the thesis work will be developed.

6) What role do formal issues of writing and presentation play in a graduate thesis? Formal issues are very important in the development and presentation of a graduate thesis. Each university and faculty usually develops its own presentation standards and guidelines, as well as the bibliographic citation system to be used, which must be respected by students. Beyond the coherence and consistency of the content, many teachers are meticulous in this aspect, and in some cases it can be an obstacle to achieving approval.
